Creating meaningful ceremonies
and lasting memories

house blessing

In 2013 my family’s home was lost in a fire, along with most of our possessions.  During the next 19 months we moved four times. After the house was rebuilt and my young children and I felt ready to move back in we chose to have a house blessing and cleansing. It felt like a necessary stage in our journey, coming full circle, so we could move forward with our lives. Anne listened to our story and put together a truly unique and personal ritual that allowed my children and I to finally lay to rest our fears of that awful night. Our house had been rebuilt to look as it had before the fire and our furnishings were in place but as we moved through the house, Anne’s words and our own individual actions and roles in the ceremony allowed a feeling of ‘home’ to flow through into each room.

Moving into a new home is an exciting though sometimes stressful time. Our homes are where we return to at the end of the working day, where we raise our families, and should be a place of safety; a place where we can relax and enjoy the company of those we love with peace of mind.

Whether you are building or buying your own home or whether you are renting, it is usual to want to “make it your own” in some way or other. A house blessing and/or cleansing is an ancient tradition that can be as simple or as layered as you wish, often in a spiritual context. It is also a way of taking emotional ownership of the house with the intention of clearing the energy of any previous occupants, particularly if there is a sense of negativity that may linger, and imbuing it with positive energy. The other intention is to ask for protection while inviting in harmony, good health, prosperity and happiness. You may like to invite family and friends to take roles in the ceremony with poems and readings, making prayer flags to hang over doors or along decks, or include a chalk blessing.

A very old home will have its own history which can be researched and acknowledged, as too those who built the house and also the land it sits on. It can be an opportunity to meet your neighbours, as part of entering a new community, perhaps finishing the ceremony with a barbecue or shared meal.
